Beryl Richards

Beryl directs TV drama, comedy and short films. She's won three BAFTAs, an RTS, a British Comedy Award, the Prix Jeunesse, and two International EMMY nominations for directing. She has also helped develop and create many popular UK series. Her recent credits are Wizards v Aliens; Recession; Leonardo and Wild at Heart. Past credits include My Life as a Popat; Girls in Love, Linda Green, My Parents are Aliens, and Spitting Image. She has a specialism in working with young and untrained actors. Beryl’s recent BBC series Leonardo won nominations for the Rose D’Or, BANFF/Rockie awards and Prix Jeunesse.

Beryl regularly makes short films for the cinema, which have been shown in competition in over 60 international festivals, including Berlin and Clemont Ferrand. Beryl's recent shorts Perfect World and Examination won a Special Jury Prize and a Gold Remi award at Houston Worldfest. Her current film Recession is about to premiere in competition at Heartland International Film Festival in USA.

Beryl first came into TV/film as a writer/director and has since written three feature scripts. Her first screenplay The Outsiders was awarded the VFF Talent Campus screenwriting prize at the Berlin Film Festival. In March ’12, her second screenplay Diamond, set in Arizona, was a top ten finalist in Cinequest’s international film festival screenplay competition in Silicon Valley, California. Her current feature Special is in development with the Wellcome Foundation/Redbird Productions.

Previous to freelance television and film work Beryl founded and ran an independent production company for 8 years.

Beryl also works part time for the European Broadcasting Union in Geneva, executive producing a worldwide co-production of kids short films.

Beryl helped set up and now chairs the DUK Women’s Working Group. She was elected Vice chair of DUK in 2013.

Beryl studied a BA in Media Studies at Westminster University; an MA in Film at Central St Martins; and a Screenwriting MA at the London College of Communication
