Heyes, Clews and Blick take the directing prizes at the Craft Awards

Phil Heyes, David Clews and Hugo Blick were the winners of the three directing awards at last night’s BAFTA Craft Awards.

Heyes won the Director: Multi-Camera award for The X Factor Final, which went out live last December. He saw off competition from Ben Kellett (Mrs Brown’s Boys), Richard Valentine (Dancing on Ice) and Claire Popplewell (The Royal Wedding).

Clews’s victory came in the Factual category, for his direction on the fixed-rig production Educating Essex. The other directors nominated were Vanessa Berlowitz, Chadden Hunter and Kathryn Jeffs for Frozen Planet (To The Ends Of The Earth), Sacha Mirzoeff for Protecting Our Children, and Charlie Russell, director of Terry Pratchett: Choosing To Die.

Meanwhile, Blick took home the statue for his series The Shadow Line, which won him the Director: Fiction award. Blick beat fellow nominees Julian Jarrold, director of Appropriate Adult, Yann Demange, for Top Boy, and John Alexander, for Exile.
