Shore-fire hit for Brit Terry George at 2012 Academy Awards

British director Terry George took home the Academy Award for Best Short Film at last night’s Oscars, wininng with his film The Shore.

George, who wrote and directed the winning entry, saw off competition from Pentecost (directed by Ireland’s Peter McDonald), Raju (by Max Zahle), Andrew Bowler’s Time Freak, and Tuba Atlantic (by Hallvar Witzo).

As most predicted, the award for Best Director went to Michel Hazanavicius, whose film The Artist also clinched Best Picture. Hazanavicius beat more renowned Hollywood names to take the directing trophy, with Woody Allen (Midnight in Paris), Alexander Payne (The Descendants), Martin Scorsese (Hugo) and Terence Malick (The Tree of Life) all losing out.

In Documentary, Undefeated, directed by Daniel Lindsay and TJ Martin, took the Features award, whilst Daniel Junge’s Saving Face won the Shorts equivalent. And in Animation Gore Verbinski’s Rango was awarded the Oscar for Best Feature, whilst William Joyce and Brandon Oldenburg’s film The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore took the trophy for Best Short.
