Biography

Marek is the third generation of filmmaker in the Losey family. His grandfather was the prolific director Joseph Losey and his father is acclaimed producer Gavrik Losey. Before moving into features Marek previously had an award-wining career as a director of advertisements. In 2009 Marek’s debut feature film THE HIDE premiered at the Dinard Film Festival. THE HIDE, shot at Pinewood Studios and on location in Kent, is the screen adaptation of Tim Whitnall’s critically acclaimed play ‘The Sociable Plover’. An intense and dark thriller, THE HIDE received excellent critical acclaim and was described as a “macabre gem” by Cosmo Landseman at The Times, while Philip French from The Guardian described the film as “a confident and highly promising feature debut from Losey”. In Britain THE HIDE received nominations at The Evening Standard Film Awards, The British Independent Film Awards and The Writer’s Guild. Accolades followed with a further six nominations and seven awards internationally. Marek is also an accomplished director of primetime TV drama. Some of his recent credits include BREATHLESS an ambitious six part period medical drama set in 1961 London staring Jack Davenport (SMASH, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN) and Ian Glenn (GAME OF THRONES). The Radio Times described BREATHLESS as “a tremendously stylish and brightly polished aquamarine of a drama”. Marek has twice been lead director on award the winning drama VERA, starring two-time Oscar nominee Brenda Blethyn (SECRETS AND LIES, LITTLE VOICE), as well as the award wining pathology BBC drama series, SILENT WITNESS, staring Emilia Fox (THE PIANIST, DORIAN GREY). Currently Marek is in postproduction on ITV Studios new reimagining of the ancient English poem of the great warrior BEOWULF. This large scale fantasy drama is the biggest ever to be produced by ITV Studios, set in the tempestuous times of the 8th century, it features a world of magic and monsters, love and betrayal and stars Kieran Bew, William Hurt and Joanne Whalley. 2016 starts with the screen adaptation of Jacqueline Gold’s autobiography BRIEF ENCOUNTERS for ITV Studios. Set in the early 1980s, this gutsy and ambitious period drama follows a group of unlikely female entrepreneurs as they begin to sell exotic lingerie. The show explores British identity in all its shades of light and dark, the women face prejudice and battle conventional attitudes as they created the now infamous Ann Summers women only parties, principle photography starts in January. Marek’s aspirations to direct feature films remain as strong as ever. Currently Marek is attached to direct three feature films: a remake of Fritz Lang’s hugely acclaimed film noir, M, a dark action thriller that will see a contemporary revisiting of the original Lang material produced by Christopher Granier-Deferre of Poisson Rouge Pictures; DYING BRAVE with USA indy production house Cool Hand, an emotionally charged drama about a man confronting unresolved family relationships as he faces up to his own mortality; and THE NIGHT CLIMBERS based on the best selling novel by Ivo Stourton, the screenplay is written by Stephen Raphael and will be produced by Paul Raphael of Starfield Productions, the project is being developed with the assistance of The European Media Fund and the BFI.
