Biography

Louise is a filmmaker and fine artist based in London, UK, after growing up on the Island of Malta, a period that has had an everlasting impact on her artistic work. Over the past ten years Louise has explored the disciplines of film and fine art, using one to inform and inspire the other, giving her work a unique voice:

“It’s not just about coverage, or conveying what you see in front of you - it’s about uncovering what’s below the surface - the emotion, tone and meaning of a moment. I want people to have a response to the story or painting: to feel the temperature of the night air as they walk through a landscape; to question what a person is feeling as they sit ... to feel the sadness, love or joy that those characters are experiencing as we watch their story unfold.”

When approaching filmmaking, Louise is inspired by the creative process she uses in her fine art that focuses on research, questioning and empathy. This impacts her directorial decisions and empowers her to elevate narratives and create films with a strong, distinct aesthetic. Sometimes this process leads her to unexpected places, but only because the story and characters take her there. She strives to treat the audience as an active participant of the film, allowing their own experiences and ideas to interpret the film how they wish.

She strives to bring out the best of the story while ensuring the audience take an active role in its revelation, whether it’s through the play in genre or through story, the audience is always required to question, challenge and interpret the film.

In the past ten years she has grown and developed as an artist and filmmaker, finding her own voice while preparing for the next stage of her creative journey. In 2018 she decided to challenge herself by making a #oneshortfilmamonth series. Working with an assortment of writers, DOP’s, Actors, editors and Sound designers every month, she was able to produce 2-3 min microshorts that were released onto social media. It allowed her to challenge herself, build lasting collaborative relationships with other creatives, master film as a medium and gain a sounder knowledge of the process of filmmaking.

As a member of Cinesisters, and Directors UK, she has been shortlisted for Eastenders Emerging Directors Scheme, been chosen as a mentee for the Directors UK inspire 2021 scheme, and continues to explore every avenue to further her career and achieve her final goal - Directing for feature film and high end TV. To further develop her own style and voice she has started to write her own scripts - currently developing ideas for short, feature and High End TV.
